Induction is scaled against a 10-day block and decay is modelled as declining to nothing at 28 days, which is a simplification of a process that varies between athletes and with how long the original block was — shorter inductions decay faster. Treat the percentage as a planning aid, not a measurement. Heat sessions carry real risk: build the duration gradually, stop if you feel unwell, and do not combine a first heat block with deliberate dehydration.

Decay is the part people forget
Heat adaptation is not banked. Without continued exposure it unwinds within weeks — after about a fortnight away, heart rate and sweat rate adaptations have decayed by roughly a third, and full acclimation is generally gone within a month. Shorter induction blocks decay faster than longer ones.
The practical consequence is about scheduling rather than volume. A block finished six weeks before a hot race has largely evaporated by the start line. Finishing closer to the race, then holding it with a short top-up session every three or four days, retains far more than one long block followed by a gap.
How the percentage here works
Induction is scaled against a 10-day block. Retention is modelled as declining linearly to zero at 28 days without exposure, and the effective figure is the two multiplied together. That is a simplification of a process that varies between individuals and with the length of the original block, so treat it as a planning aid rather than a measurement.

Does heat training help performance in cool conditions?
This tool does not make that claim. The adaptations it tracks — plasma volume, heart rate, sweat sodium — are well established for performance in the heat. Can I use a sauna instead of training in the heat?
Post-exercise heat exposure including sauna has been used to produce acclimation adaptations, so it is a real option when the weather will not cooperate. The caution is the same either way: build exposure gradually, treat it as training stress that adds to your overall load rather than as a free extra, and stop if you feel unwell.
