Between the end of bleeding and ovulation. This is the phase most often labelled the time to push hard. Controlled trials have not shown that training harder here produces better outcomes than training consistently.
This tool tells you where you are in your cycle. It does not tell you how to train, because the evidence does not support that: the largest meta-analysis found only a trivial performance reduction in the early follicular phase, drawn from a literature where two thirds of studies were rated low or very low quality, and a 2025 review concluded that evidence for periodising training by cycle phase is lacking. Your own tracked pattern is more useful than any population rule.
What this tool does, and what it refuses to do
It tells you which phase of your cycle you are in today, when your next period is due, and which phase a race date falls in. Those are useful planning facts.
It does not tell you to train hard in one phase and back off in another, because the research does not support that, however confidently the internet says otherwise.
What the evidence actually shows
The largest synthesis, McNulty and colleagues (2020, *Sports Medicine*), pooled 78 studies and found exercise performance trivially reduced during the early follicular phase compared with other phases. Trivial is the authors' word. The same review rated 42% of the included studies as low quality and a further 26% as very low, with only 8% rated high.
A 2025 review in the *Strength and Conditioning Journal* went further, concluding that evidence for periodising strength or endurance training according to menstrual cycle phase, in order to optimise performance, is lacking.
So the honest position is: population-level phase effects are small and poorly evidenced, and building a training block around them is not supported. Tracking *your own* responses over several cycles is a better use of the same effort, because between-athlete variation is far larger than the average phase effect.

Why ovulation is not simply day 14
The luteal phase is the relatively fixed part of the cycle at roughly 14 days, while the follicular phase absorbs most of the variation. Ovulation is therefore estimated here as your cycle length minus 14, not as a fixed midpoint. On a 34-day cycle that is around day 20, not day 17.
If you are on hormonal contraception
Combined hormonal contraception suppresses the natural cycle. Bleeding in the pill-free interval is a withdrawal bleed, not a period, and the phases described here do not map onto it in the same way.

Should I train differently in each phase of my cycle?
The evidence does not support it. How is ovulation estimated here?
As your cycle length minus 14 days, rather than a fixed day 14. The luteal phase — from ovulation to your next period — is the relatively constant part of the cycle at around 14 days, while the follicular phase carries most of the variation. On a 32-day cycle this puts ovulation near day 18 rather than day 16.
My periods have stopped since I increased training. Is that normal?
It is common, but it is not harmless and it is not a sign that training is going well. Three or more consecutive months without a period is secondary amenorrhoea and is a recognised indicator of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, with consequences for bone density and long-term health. It is worth seeing a clinician rather than waiting it out, and worth looking at whether energy intake has kept pace with training load.
Does this work if I am on the pill?
Not in the same way. Combined hormonal contraception suppresses the natural hormonal cycle, so the bleed during the pill-free interval is a withdrawal bleed rather than a true period and the phase boundaries here do not describe your physiology. You can still use the tool to track the pack, but the phase labels will not mean what they mean for a natural cycle.
Why does the calculator say my predictions are rough?
Because your cycle length falls outside the usual 21 to 35 day range, or you have reported that your cycles are irregular. Most cycle variation sits in the follicular phase, so an irregular cycle makes any forward projection of ovulation or a future phase unreliable. Persistent irregularity in an athlete is also worth raising with a clinician, since low energy availability is one of the causes.
